The Pandemic is a Portal, Audain Gallery, SFU Galleries, Vancouver, June 22 – July 31, 2020
An audiovisual meditation on virtuality, dissociation, alienation and the creative possibilities in crisis. Mackenzie and Merle explore strange, altered landscapes in search of mystery and collective ritual, drawing on soundwalk and audiowalk traditions and Pauline Oliveros’s solo meditations.
Shot on a cell phone and recorded with a Zoom recorder, modular synth and digital instruments during the first phase of Vancouver’s pandemic response.
Made for The Pandemic is a Portal, an exhibition by SFU Galleries that took up Arundhati Roy’s idea of the pandemic as “a gateway between one world and the next”, renouncing a return to a normalcy that was already a catastrophe for many and moving towards an otherwise world rooted in care.
