Demonstration Rooms: interventions by Céline Condorelli, Kapwani Kiwanga and Judy Radul
Albertinum, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, March 2 – June 2, 2019
Shown alongside Heimo Zobernig. Piet Mondrian: A Spatial Appropriation
A sound work for Judy Radul’s Show Support at the Albertinum, Dresden. Composed with modular synthesis, sound manipulation, found sound and field recordings, Fess imagines twisting joints, muscle-less, bony materialities and the impish tender, accompanying Radul’s video and sculptural works on modes of support, display and the behind.
From the Albertinum: “Taking designs for interiors produced during the Modernist period as a starting point, contemporary artists are presenting their own spatial concepts and exhibition designs in the Albertinum. Since the mid-1980s the artist Heimo Zobernig has been experimenting with the design of interiors and the presentation of art, as well as with geometric abstractions like those of Piet Mondrian. In a series of paintings created successively from the year 2000 onwards, he has used materials such as acrylic paint and tape to investigate the grid structure as an avant-garde form of expression since the Modernist era.
The artists Céline Condorelli, Kapwani Kiwanga, and Judy Radul were invited, within the framework of the project Demonstration Rooms, to develop artistic interventions in the Albertinum’s collection presentation. In different spaces of the museum they show newly commissioned site-specific works that direct attention to those elements of the exhibition that otherwise would be easily overlooked: benches, light, plinths, and the transparent walls of the viewing depot. The new works deal with habits of seeing and of spatial perception.”
Demonstration Rooms builds on El Lissitzky’s 1926 ‘Demonstration Room’ for the Dresden International Art Exhibition, and was shown alongside Heimo Zobernig. Piet Mondrian: A Spatial Appropriation, in which Zobernig draws on designs and ideas by Piet Mondrian.
